Projection

This music video is for 'Sweater' by Willow. A technique called Video Projection Mapping was used alongside blank walls to create this allusion of a world within a studio and it's something that I would like to incorporate into my music video. This technique of projection can also be seen faintly within the previously posted video of Navy - Kilo Kish.

Top Tips

Art Director

  • It's difficult to think about how the picture will look on screen and on camera.
  • Can be realistic or totally fantasy.
  • Art directors are usually given a budget to work within.
  • Style references are important.
  • Things don't have to be real - as long as they appear real (sticking up shelves with black-tack).
  • Communication is important.
  • A clear idea of what you want to achieve is important - storyboarding/casting.
Make-up and Costume Design

  • Create something that works with the brief or track.
  • When working with strong lighting, the face becomes flat - using a sculpting brush can prevent this.
  • Costumes are made to fit.
  • Being observant and having a vision is important.
  • Shopping and sourcing within a budget is important.
  • Experience and networking is vital.
  • 'Can-do' attitude.
  • It is important to plan your time carefully.
  • Create a storyboard and get references - research and develop.
  • Keep it simple.
Choreographer

  • Work in steps.
  • The movement shows the expression and reflects the story.
  • Change and adapt the choreography to suit the performer if needed.
  • Prepare - if you plan to be in the choreography and also film it, then get an assistant.
  • Ensure that rehearsal space can facilitate everybody.
  • 'Warming up' is important.
  • Get experience.
  • Film the choreography first and watch it back - then you are able to see the movement from a broader point of view.
Directors

  • Everything 'hangs around' the director's vision - you need to be clear of what you want to achieve.
  • Ideas can be stimulus from a band, information about the track from the artist, or even ideas that you have been developing previously.
  • Be original.
  • Keep in mind what your strengths are and play them to your advantage.
  • Attention to detail is important.
Director of Photography

  • Work around the restrictions of a location and figure out how to produce the best look within a budget.
  • Whatever the image, the period of time shooting is usually within the short space of one day.
  • Quick problem solving and collaboration with others is important.
  • When the concept is strong and simple, the lighting has to coincide with this.
  • Timing is crucial.
  • Keep it simple.
  • Make something by using the tools that suit the idea.
